There’s something so rejuvenating about being outdoors in the fresh air and beauty of nature. Before the temperature rises too high, it’s a good idea to help the older adults you love spend some time outside. It doesn’t have to involve anything elaborate; there are plenty of senior activities to enjoy together this spring that require no planning or preparation.
What Are Some Fun Outdoor Activity Ideas for Seniors?
Try one or more of these ideas with your older family members:
- Dine outdoors – with a show. Take a twist on traditional picnicking. Try an early morning breakfast on the back deck, for instance, while watching the world wake up. If you place bird houses or feeders nearby, you’ll have feathered visitors to observe and discuss. Or take a bowl of popcorn outside in the early evening and simply enjoy the sunset together.
- Go for a scavenger hunt walk. Come up with a simple list of several items that you and your family member will try to spot during a walk together. This allows you to slow down and take notice of your surroundings a little more closely. If you and your family member enjoy some friendly competition, decide on a small reward for the person who finds the most items.
- Plan a garden. The sky’s the limit when it comes to gardening! You can create a small table-height garden that prevents the need for bending and stooping. Talk about different flowers, vegetables, or herbs the person is interested in trying to grow. Decide where to place the garden, and then take a shopping trip together for seeds, soil, and other supplies.
- Turn spring cleaning into reminiscing. Go through closets and drawers and gather up a collection of items. Find a comfortable, shaded spot outdoors and spend some time looking through the items and sharing stories about them. Photo albums are of course a great place to start, but you can also look at holiday decorations, travel souvenirs and mementos, and other memorabilia.
